About

Asthmatic Kitty Records is an independent record label that was co-founded by Lowell Brams and his stepson, singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens, in 1999.

Since its founding, AKR has released albums by a variety of artists, including Lily & Madeleine, My Brightest Diamond and Helado Negro, and is currently home to Sufjan Stevens, Angelo De Augustine, Denison Witmer, Half-handed Cloud and The Welcome Wagon. The label is known for supporting a diverse range of musical styles.

Asthmatic Kitty was named after Sara, an orange and white tabby who wandered out of the woods pregnant and starving near Holland, Michigan in 1994.

For fourteen years she brought joy as a beloved friend to Lowell, enjoying a happy life despite her initial hardships. Her asthma improved after moving west to New Mexico and Wyoming, where she lived out her days as an asthmatic kitty in name only.

Does Asthmatic Kitty Records accept demos?

While we’re always willing to hear new music, we can’t listen to or reply to all inquiries. If you wish to send us your music, please do so digitally and via a link (no attachments or physical demos accepted). Include a brief note about yourself and your music, and limit yourself to one submission. No follow-ups, please – someone will be in touch if there’s interest. In the meantime, keep honing your craft. Everything else will follow!

Do you hire interns?

We are not hiring interns at this time.

Can I use one of your artists' music in my film / tv / podcast?

Due to the high volume of sync requests we receive, we have a minimum budget threshold for consideration. If you’d like to know our requirements, please contact us with details about your project, including the full usage scope and link to view the completed scene. Unfortunately, we cannot assist with the sync process or provide quotes in advance. Best of luck with your project!
