CRYPTACIZE RETURN WITH MYTHOMANIA

Since the release of Dig That Treasure, Cryptacize have toured the US three times, as well as England and Scandinavia, opening for bands like Why?, Danielson, Shearwater, Ponytail, Magik Markers, Marnie Stern, The Blow, and Mirah. And admidst all of this touring they managed to take time to not only write but record an outstanding sophmore release. An unlikely synthesis of musical styles, Cryptacize’s new album, Mythomania, is an album not quite like any other. Recorded by Cryptacize in a cabin near Yosemite National Park over the summer of 2008, Mythomania will be released on April 21st on Asthmatic Kitty.
Mythomania is a revelation by anyone’s measure. The playing shows a new level of confidence and intent, as well as an artful sense of timing – it’s the sound of a band that’s found themselves and is growing by leaps and bounds. The music is thicker and more continuous; in addition to autoharp, guitars and drums there are now electric basses, keyboards, piano, even found or purely electronic sounds. And yet the same sense of space and suspense which guided 2008’s Dig That Treasure is instantly recognizable on Mythomania. Nedelle Torrisi’s surefooted and richly nuanced vocal arabesques, like a modern day Freddie Mercury or Ronnie Spector, strangely complement Chris Cohen’s guitar, maniacally sped-up a la Les Paul or staccato and funny like Roy Smeck or Adolph Jacobs of the Coasters. Michael Carreira’s syncopated drum corps rudiments and pit-orchestra rave-ups propel the songs with a refreshingly buoyant touch that never lapses into rock music cliches.

Read more here, or listen for yourself to a sneak peek of Mythomania, courtesy of C. Spencer Yeh (of Burning Star Core) who has collaged and distilled the album into a mini-Mythomania.

Goodbye to Sara, an “asthma kitty,” 1993-2008

December 29th, 2008 , by

Sara, for fourteen years a beloved friend and the inspiration for our label name, left this world on Tuesday, December 23rd, after six weeks of declining health. She was fifteen or sixteen years old. Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. Lanny Hamilton, who helped us make Sara’s last weeks as comfortable as possible. (Click more to continue reading.)

Pregnant and starving when she walked out of the woods by my house near Holland, Michigan, in 1994, Sara was a walking calamity. Despite a week of food and vitamins prescribed by a vet, she nearly died after birthing her litter, but pulled through after a shot from the same doctor. He tried to save her kittens as well, but eight hours after the first one was born, they had all died, their organs under-developed from malnourishment. Sara was then diagnosed and treated for several infections, two types of worms, and feline asthma, though I was told there wasn’t much we could do about the asthma. The vet didn’t suggest moving west, but when we moved to New Mexico in 2000, we noticed that the loud wheeze in her breathing eventually disappeared. We moved to Wyoming, with a similar climate, in 2002, where Sara remained an asthmatic kitty mostly in name only.

During an exam in the late ‘90s, a vet referred to "asthma kitties," and for some reason I remembered it when my step-son Sufjan and I discussed naming the record label we planned to start. I said "asthmatic kitty," but a minute later vetoed the idea because I didn’t want a disease in the name. However, after we’d suggested and rejected dozens of other names, Sufjan brought up Asthmatic Kitty again, I relented, and that’s what we named it. Over the years, people who’ve enjoyed the music we’ve released have told us about their own asthmatic kitties, and Sara, whose photo appears on our website and several albums, became an indie-pop diva of sorts. As a kitty, though, Sara was anything but a diva in character; never aloof and always loving, she was the sweetest pet one could ask for. Her only bad habit was tipping over the kitchen trash can if she smelled meat in it.

We can’t know if it’s true that when we die, all the pets we’ve had in our life will come running to see us, but I’d like it to be, because I’d dearly love to see Sara again.

(MERRY) CHRISTMAS MUSIC!

December 24th, 2008 , by

Today is Christmas Eve, and several of our artists have musical presents for everyone!

Three show up on the second volume of A Familyre Christmas from sister-label Sounds Familyre. Half-handed Cloud packed "Home for Christmas" into the volume (see if you can pick out the voices of Nedelle and Chris from Cryptacize!), Liz Janes carefully wrapped "Mary’s Song," and Sufjan Stevens must have found some of Manheim Steamroller’s gear on ebay to record "Good King Wenceslas." You can listen to all these songs, plus several more from friends like Danielson, Lenny Smith, Soul-junk, The Singing Mechanic, and Innocence Mission right here.

Chris Schlarb (also of I Heart Lung) started a new tradition this year and gathered his family to record a Christmas album. "The high-concept, two part Christmastime in… series is sure to please the closet prog-heads out there," writes Chris. You can download the four-song album (complete with amazing cover art!) here.

DM Stith also recorded "Ecstatic Only Static Peace (Peace to Me)," which showed up this morning on Stereogum’s cyber-doorstep, right here. Stith comments, "I imagined a cartoon Christmas special like the ones I grew up watching, and in this one, there’s a musical number featuring a dilapidated old house who is singing about a dream of being dressed in Christmas lights. For him it’s like the ultimate act of honor. So I imagine this old house watching the other houses on the street get all decked up for Christmas and he’s left without, no glory in the winter weather. I think David Bowie is playing the voice of the old house."

And then of course, there’s the full, free stream of Sufjan’s 5-CD Christmas boxset, a video game simulation of Christmas, a specially designed Christmas eCard generator, some last-minute ornaments from Laura Park, and some cute videos all right here.

Thanks AK artists, for the great year and for this wonderful Christmas music. And thanks to you! From all of us at Asthmatic Kitty Records, we hope everyone reading this has a bright, shiny, warm, snowy Christmas.

MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND ON DAYTROTTER

December 20th, 2008 , by

My Brightest Diamond is no stranger to Daytrotter. That said, we are always happy when Shara Worden of MBD shows up to the Rock Island, Illinois music writehouse. She did, just last week, and as always Daytrotter does what only they can: go deep. In this case, they plumb out the spirit of epic myth and sad pragmatism that infuses MBD’s music. MBD also drops four songs for Daytrotter, including a b-side here and there.

FOL CHEN BELIEVES IN VIDEO

December 12th, 2008 , by

There’s four related pieces of information you should know about Fol Chen. Kelly Sears (click more for information) has made a video of "The Believers" for Fol Chen. We have released this song as a free download. Meanwhile, Clifford Lidell remixed the very same song (see below). Finally, on December 14th, Fol Chen is playing at the Christmas party for the Los Angeles Dodgeball Society at 2:30pm. Somehow, it’s all coming together.
