Angelo De Augustine’s fifth full-length album, Angel in Plainclothes, is out today on Asthmatic Kitty Records. The record follows 2023’s Toil and Trouble and marks his first since recovering from an undiagnosed illness that required him to relearn basic abilities including walking, talking, and playing music. Written, recorded, arranged, produced, and mixed by De Augustine at his home studio, Angel in Plainclothes is a deeply personal reflection on fragility, perseverance, and the gift of second chances.
Angelo teamed up with producer/musician Jonathan Wilson (Angel Olsen, Father John Misty) on “The Cure,” the only co-produced track on the album. Also featuring Wilson on drums, the song draws a devastating parallel between chronic illness and addiction—two forces that promise relief while slowly taking everything away: “I’ll give you wings and fill your breath / Take your life and give you death / And I’ll take till nothing’s left”.
