MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND ON BENEFIT CHRISTMAS COMPILATION

December 11th, 2008 , by

It’s Christmas! That means it’s time for Christmas music! And giving!

I’ll Stay ‘Til After Christmas combines both into one sublime, snowy Christmas compilation. Released by Animal World Recordings and compiled by Daniel Gill, the album includes a My Brightest Diamond cover of David Bowie’s "Nature Boy." The comp benefits Amnesty International. It’s also packed full of music perfect for snowy, chilly evenings curled up with headphones, hot chocolate, and a thick blanket. You can buy it digitally via iTunes here, or Amazon MP3 here.

DIAMOND TAINTS, RAFTER LEAVES; BOTH GUILTY

November 25th, 2008 , by

NYC-based label Engine Room Recordings has just released their second volume modern indie covers of pop favorites, Guilt by Association, and guess who’s on this collection? Our very own My Brightest Diamond and Rafter. MBD covers Gloria Jones/Soft Cell’s "Tainted Love" while Rafter cowbells OMD’s "If You Leave."

The CD doesn’t come out until February, but you can buy the digital version for $9.99 from iTunes here or Amazon MP3 here. A preview is available for a limited time via Engine Room. You can listen to their wonderful web widget by clicking "more" below. Or, if you prefer, you can download My Brightest Diamond’s cover by visiting Pitchfork here.

NEW MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND VIDEO, REMIX ALBUM, TOUR

November 2nd, 2008 , by

Illustrator and animator Rafa Toro set his pencil to "Inside a Boy," the lead track from My Brightest Diamond’s latest full length, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth. The result is a Halloween-esque love story, replete with tentacle monsters, daring rescues, and a touching love story. You can view the video right here on Stereogum.

In other meta MBD news, iTunes just started selling the first volume in a series of remixes of Shark’s Teeth. Alfred Brown takes to Shark’s Teeth in volume one, his quirk managing not only to playfully tweak the music like a toy, but also reveal the album’s sublime, expansive nature.

Read more about the album here, or you can go ahead buy it on iTunes for just $5.99 by clicking here.

MBD is on a very wide tour right now, stopping just about, well, everywhere. And you may not even have to pay to get in, if you manage to win the contest they’re running over at mybrightestdiamond.com! Read about it right here.

MY BRIGHTEST DIAMOND LOOKS DOWN

October 25th, 2008 , by

Rooftop concerts have a long and celebrated history in rock and roll, and so it’s no surprise that the recently launched (and very watchable) Pitchfork.tv brought the rooftop concert to the living room laptop with their Don’t Look Down series of video.

For the show’s newest installment, Don’t Look Down convinces My Brightest Diamond, in string quartet formation, to haul their instruments and equipment all the way up to a brickly rooftop in New York City. Once there, they play four perfect rooftop selections: "Golden Star," "Apples," "From the Top of the World" (from the recently released EP), and "Black & Costaud."

And boy, does My Brightest Diamond really ring it out. Even if you’re afraid of heights, we think you’ll enjoy hearing Shara Worden’s voice ring out across the skyline. Part one is here, and part two is right here. (You don’t see it on tape, but we bet MBD broke the rule and looked down. Shame!)

VOTE FOR MBD ON BBC2

September 13th, 2008 , by

Each week Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Marconie, hosts of one BBC2’s radio shows select four songs and then let listeners vote by email. They then play that song every day for the following week.

This week they’ve chosen "From the Top of the World" by My Brightest Diamond as one of their new "Pick n’ Mix" selections. Yay! We of course agree that "From the Top of the World" is a good choice. You can listen to the song yourself on the show’s webapage, here, or watch the new music video (crafted with help from many wonderful people, including Tim Fite and puppeteer Lake Simons)  by clicking more.

If you like the song as much as we do, we’d really appreciate a vote! You can do that by emailing the name of the song ("From the Top of the World") to [email protected]. Deadline is at noon on Monday London time (6AM EST).

DIAMOND ON TOP OF THE WORLD WITH NEW EP, TOUR

August 9th, 2008 , by

Not long ago (June, actually), My Brightest Diamond released A Thousand Shark’s Teeth, a full-length album that charmed as much as challenged us.

The band could have sat on their proverbial, diamond-laden laurels. But they are most certainly not. Instead, led by their intrepid frontwoman Shara Worden, Diamond has returned to the studio to record three new songs for the From the Top of the World single; a love letter to 1930s French music in the form of a an EP. iTunes will have this exclusively, starting on September 23. Click here to read more about the release.

This digital-only release will be not so digital when My Brightest Diamond takes to the air in September from Brooklyn and only hours later lands in Europe. She’ll be no doubt playing these songs, as well as selections from Sharks Teeth, when she passes through the UK, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, and France. Click here to see more details.

MBD PLAYS AMONG BALLOONS

August 1st, 2008 , by

When French indie music website Les Inrocks asked Shara Worden of My Brightest Diamond to sit down and perform a session, Shara found the nearest sea of balloons she could. See her perform "Padam Padam" and "The Gentlest Gentleman" here.

Last week, My Brightest Diamond let loose their new album, A Thousand Shark’s Teeth. It seems that many of you like it. Others though, have not yet heard it. We feel that everyone should have a chance to listen to this carefully crafted piece of music.

That’s why we’re going to stream it, for a limited time, right here this little piece of cyberspace we call home. Summer rains predicted this weekend? Sunny picnic? Either way, perfect. Load up the old laptop, fire up the stream, close your eyes, and please enjoy.

This stream will only be up a limited time, and there are some window sills and picnic areas that don’t yet have de-wired Internet, so you can order the CD here for $10 (+S&H). Click here to listen to the album.

MBD PARTIES LIKE THEY HAVE A NEW ALBUM, BECAUSE THEY DO

June 16th, 2008 , by

Tomorrow on Tuesday June 17th, My Brightest Diamond will be releasing A Thousand Shark’s Teeth, their second full length album. If you’ve ever been to one of MBD’s parties, you know that they take it very seriously. Agenda includes marimba, horns, toys, party hats, and strings.

Sxip Shirey, composer/sound designer/performer/story-teller/curator, will open. The enchanting puppetry of Lake Simons follows, who may or may not have convinced a magical elephant puppet to perform. My Brightest Diamond will close the evening, no doubt playing through the reportorie of tracks from the new album, along with a few surprises.

The doors of the Blender Theater at Gramercy in Manhattan open at 7pm. Admission is $18, and you can pick up tickets early right here. There are some of us at AK that are not in NYC, and we are sad. If you are within travelable distance to the Blender Theater, go as proxy. It will be unforgettable, we promise.

As far as the album is concerned, ordering is still in technically "pre" at least until 11:59pm tonight. That means if you preorder the album, you receive a free, downloadable digital EP. After 11:59pm tonight, you will not have a chance to get the EP.  So get it while the getting is good. Preorder here ($11 for CD, $12 for LP, plus S&H).
