Get Sufjan Stevens' The BQE

Sufjan Stevens is proud to present The BQE, a cinematic suite inspired by the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway and the Hula-Hoop. Commissioned by Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), The BQE was originally performed in the Howard Gilman Opera House in celebration of the 25th anniversary Next Wave Festival in October of 2007.

The BQE is an experiment in multi-media. Sufjan wanted to present it in as many forms and methods as we could muster, which ended up being quite a lot. We made this page to keep track of it all. To read more about the release of The BQE click here

The CD/DVD which includes a DVD of the original 16mm/8mm film (in widescreen "triptych" display), the original motion picture soundtrack (CD), a 40-page booklet (with extensive liner notes and photographs), and a stereoscopic image reel (playable in all View-Master viewers).
The limited edition vinyl is available as a double gatefold and includes the soundtrack on 180-gram vinyl, a large-scale 32-page booklet with liner notes and photographs, and a black-and-white version of the 40-page Hooper Heroes comic book.
The MP3 version includes thirteen lovingly encoded DRM-free, CD quality (320kbps) MP3s for play at home or abroad in your personal MP3 player or computing device, and a 40-page digital booklet with liner notes and photographs, for perusal also on your computer.
 
The HD download includes an HD QuickTime digital replica of the original 16mm/8mm film (in widescreen "triptych" display).

This 40-page comic book (cover by Matt Loux, masthead by Christian Acker), tells the story of three extra-terrestrial superhero sisters and their use of hula-hoops to combat the "the Messiah of Civic Projects," Captain Moses. The comic book is written by Stevens and gorgeously drawn, colored, and inked by longtime friend and collaborator Stephen Halker. More info here.
Photographed by Denny Renshaw and designed by David Stith, this 22" x 32" full-color poster encapsulates the energy of the Hooper Heroes at work, and the BQE as a tool in the modernist cospiracy to mobilize Americans. Try hanging it on your wall! See larger image here.
